Final assessment

It is important for health care professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually and physically so that they can provide the highest standard level of care to their patients.  We must have psychological, spiritual and physical control and management before we can provide this to our patients.  “Psychological development allows us to discover the unconscious patterns that feed destructive emotions and their outer expression” (Dacher, p. 142).  Once practitioners can determine the negative, in themselves or their patients, they can remove it and replace this with positive.  Practitioners should possess wellness and health in their physical and spiritual self to give and provide care to others.
I have many personal goals and more so now after taking this class.  Honestly, I need to develop in all areas of health and wellness some more than others.   I have assessed my health in each area and this is where I stand today.  I would rate my spirituality at a 6.  I have not fully evolved into my spiritual self to where I should be and want to be.  I have learned and grown so much in this class and have begun to look at myself much different than I had prior to this class.  I have learned the art of meditation and visualization into my inner self.  It seems each minute of my life is a little longer, if that makes any sense.  I feel I can evaluate myself and situations better.  This takes me to psychological flourishing which I would rate myself a 7.  I think I have learned to accept that stress and frustration will come my way and have learned how to react to this.  When I am hit with a large amount of stress, I stop what I am doing, I start breathing exercises to clear my mind and stretch at the same time.  I even do this when I am at work.  Once I have regained my thoughts and have calmed down, I can then tackle what needs to be done with a calm and focused mind.  My physical score has exceeded the most from the beginning of this class 9 weeks ago with a score of 9.  I have shed about 4 pounds and my running time has decreased about 20 seconds per mile.  I feel lighter and stronger.  I have also begun working with a fitness trainer on strength training which I am very excited about.
My physical goal is to tone up the areas on my body that need it.  I would like to see my body fat percentage decrease without losing any more actual weight.  My psychological goal is to continue working to bring my stress down.  Stress is the biggest problem I face on a daily basis. I do not feel stressed when I am home, but my work days are overflowing.  I want to work more on letting things go and not carrying this with me throughout the day.  I hold onto unwanted, negative feelings much too long. I think through time and practice this should come.  I need to gain more confidence as well.  My spiritual goal is to become more connected within my inner self of mind and body.  This goes together with my psychological self in the aspect of relieving these negative unwanted feelings.
Physical strategies to implement to foster growth are to be consistent in weight training and cardio training.  A workout routine is the best way to reach this goal.  I make sure to do cardio 3-4 times a week and weight training 2 days a week.  Following this plan with a balanced diet and lots of water will get me to my physical goals.
Psychological examples such as meditation, breathing, and visualization exercises can be used to foster growth and personal health.  I plan to continue listening to mediation exercises before my running workouts on my Ipod.  By doing this, I clear my mind of the daily stress and begin my workout fresh.  I use breathing exercises while I am running to maintain control of my breathing and heart rate.  By using both of these strategies I have become a more efficient runner.  My time has significantly improved.
Spiritual examples are developing the witnessing and calm abiding mind.  These two exercises have helped to observe and control my spiritual well being. I am working on my interpersonal self to promote my, as well as others, health and wellbeing. I plan on sharing my wisdom and loving kindness to others. “The shift from I to you to us to all of us” (Dacher, p. 43).
A good way to assess my progress in 6 months will be reading my assignments from this class.  We did a lot of personal assessment throughout this course that I can compare too.  I plan on continuing this way of life and although I have a lot of growth ahead of me, I have learned a lot from this class.  I plan on continuing my meditation and breathing exercises indefinitely.  Our life is short lived and I want to have the highest level of health and wellness not only for myself but so I can provide this to others.  My main goal in this life is to share my love and kindness to others so I can heal them.  My profession has given me the opportunity to work and heal as many people as I can.  I feel I am stronger and healthier from the knowledge gained throughout this course.  I am forever thankful for the life I live and the people I encounter throughout it.
